Japan's construction industry is facing a serious shortage of skilled workers. Through the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) status of residence, foreigners who have the required Japanese language ability and construction skills can work on construction sites in Japan.
Candidates qualify by passing two tests: a Japanese language test (JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 and above) and the Construction Skills Assessment Test, which measures practical knowledge and on-site ability.
The work covers core construction tasks such as formwork, rebar placement, concrete pressure feeding, interior finishing and plastering — all carried out to the safety and quality standards expected on Japanese building sites.
